How do Drafts Usually Take Place?

Drafts can be confusing, especially for people watching for the first time. we’re here to help! Here’s a simple guide to show you how drafts usually work each year.

Here’s a guide to understanding how the draft process might look for the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season based on common practices in drafting leagues.

1. Retention Announcements

Before the draft begins, each team will announce which players from last season they plan to keep. These “retained” players will stay with their current team and won’t be part of the draft.

Teams will also need to release some players, which makes these players eligible for selection by other teams in the draft.

2. Player Categories and Lists

Cricket Australia will share a list of eligible players, organized into categories based on things like skill level and past performance.

Categories: Players may be grouped as marquee players, overseas players, domestic players, and emerging talents.

Pick Order Announcement: The order of picks for each draft round will be decided and announced in advance. This helps teams plan which players to select and in what order. The order may depend on past-season performance or a random draw.

3. Draft Rounds and Pick Strategy

Each player category will usually go through multiple rounds, where teams pick players one by one.

Teams create plans, focusing on players who fill gaps in their lineup and strengthen their overall team.

4. Revoke Option (Re-pick Twist)

If a team released a player but wants them back, there’s a special option called “revoke.” This allows a team to reclaim a player even if another team has already picked them, but it comes with a cost: the team has to skip its next pick in that round.

5. Trade Opportunities

Pre-Draft Trades: Teams can trade their draft picks with other teams. They may trade players already on their roster or swap draft positions.

This setup keeps things competitive. With options like the revoke and trades, teams can reclaim key players or secure top talent, adding strategy and excitement to the draft.

Here’s how these trades typically work.

Players in the Big Bash League (BBL) are sorted into different groups based on a few important factors. These factors include their experience, current form, popularity, and how well they perform in games. The main categories for players in the BBL include:

  • Platinum
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Bronze

In the Big Bash League (BBL), platinum players earn the most money, while bronze players earn the least. Platinum players are the top athletes, showing exceptional skill and talent on the field. But just because bronze players make less money doesn’t mean they aren’t talented. Every category has players who work hard and contribute to their teams in different ways.

In past seasons, Gold players have changed the outcome of the games. They stepped up and made big plays when it mattered most. Meanwhile, the players in the higher categories often played smaller roles, like side characters in a story. These Gold players showed everyone just how important they can be in winning matches.
