BBL Teams Prepare for Trade Window with Marsh and David Available

Each BBL team can only have 10 players contracted by the end of the regular season. The Perth Scorchers have managed to keep Ashton Agar for the next three BBL seasons, despite interest from the Melbourne Renegades. However, the futures of Mitchell Marsh, Jason Behrendorff, and AJ Tye are still uncertain.

Agar, a standout player in domestic and international cricket, was a major target for the Renegades. The 31-year-old would have become a free agent if he hadnโ€™t signed by Sunday night, but now he is secured with the Scorchers for the next three years.

Before free agency started, each team could only sign up to 10 players. The Scorchers have reached that limit, meaning Marsh, who was out for a duck in his only appearance for the Scorchers this season, will be available for other teams to sign during the trade window starting January 28.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes also reached their 10-player limit by signing fast bowler Riley Meredith and rising star Mitchell Owen. This means Tim David, who played a key role in their run to the finals this season, will be up for grabs by other teams.

“Mitch has really stepped up in the opening role. Heโ€™s been not only entertaining but has also given the rest of the batting order confidence to play their natural game,” said Salliann Beams, Cricket Tasmaniaโ€™s general manager of high performance. “Heโ€™s been preparing all season, and we needed this change to build for the future. Mitch is a great investment for our team.”

The Scorchers are now looking to lock in Behrendorff, with the Renegades in the lead to sign him. Tyeโ€™s future is unclear after he lost his spot in the Scorchersโ€™ preferred lineup. Behrendorff has taken the most wickets this season with 17 and is considered one of the best pace bowlers in the league.

Agar, who has taken 69 wickets in 94 matches for the Scorchers, is excited to stay. “Perth is my home. I moved here from Melbourne when I was 18, and I’ve never looked back. To be with the Scorchers for another three years means everything to me. Itโ€™s amazing to play with my best mates in front of the best fans in Australia,” he said.

One of the young players Perth has locked in is 19-year-old bowler Mahli Beardman. He already bowls over 140kph, and his impressive 3 for 17 against the Strikers in just his second BBL match shows his potential. Beardman aims to reach 150kph in the future. “Iโ€™m still small, but hopefully a couple of seasons in the gym will help me reach that 150 mark,” he said.

Peter Siddle has decided not to retire just yet. At 41, he will play another season in the BBL with the Melbourne Stars. Siddle, who retired from international cricket in 2019, is Starsโ€™ top wicket-taker this season. He has been vital in their recovery after a tough start. By the time next season starts, Siddle will be 41 years old.

After three years in Tasmania, Siddle returned to Victoria for the 2023-24 season on a two-year deal. He plans to retire after this season and will only play in the BBL next summer. To stay fit, heโ€™ll focus on masters cricket and cycling.
