Steve Smith Joins List of BBL Century Makers | Record with Stunning 121
Steve Smith has tied the record for the most centuries in Big Bash League (BBL) history with a brilliant 121* off 64 balls. He scored this while opening for the Sydney Sixers against the Perth Scorchers in the 2024/25 season.
Smith, who was part of the Australian team that recently won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India, started the BBL season with a bang. This century was his first T20 since July when he played in the USA’s Major League Cricket.
Smith’s record-breaking return in BBL
Opening the innings with Josh Philippe, Smith scored his fourth T20 century and third in the BBL. He reached his century in just 58 balls and stayed unbeaten. Over the last two years, Smith has been in great form, with three BBL centuries. In 21 innings since the start of 2023, he averages 59.37 and has a strike rate of 158.86.
His score of 121* is now his second-highest in T20s, behind his 125* from January 2023. All of Smith’s BBL centuries have come while opening the batting.
Smithโs third BBL century places him at the top of the BBL century list, tied with Ben McDermott. Only seven other players have scored multiple centuries in the BBL.
Smithโs century helped the Sixers post their highest-ever score in BBL history: 220/3. Captain Moises Henriques also played a key role, hitting 46 off 23 balls, while Ben Dwarshuis added a quick 23 off 7 balls.
