Warner’s Skill Leads Thunder to BBL Final
David Warner is leading Sydney Thunder’s impressive comeback this season after his captaincy ban was lifted. Last year, the Thunder finished at the bottom of the ladder, winning just one game. This season, they’ve transformed into a serious finals contender, thanks in large part to Warner, described as a “ball of energy.”
In the previous season, Thunder didn’t just finish last—they secured the wooden spoon with a performance that left fans disappointed. But this year, they’re back in the race. On Monday night, Thunder face the Hobart Hurricanes, with a chance to add to their only title, won in 2016 with stars like Jacques Kallis, Shane Watson, and Michael Hussey.
Warner has been a key figure in this turnaround. Although he was part of Thunder in the past two seasons, his national duties limited his appearances. This summer, however, the 38-year-old has been the face of both the team and the Big Bash League (BBL). He’s captained the side, scored a league-best 357 runs, and brought energy and focus to every match.
“Warner brings the crowds,” Thunder teammate Sam Billings said. “He’s still the best player in the tournament by far. His talent is unbelievable, but it’s also his energy and game sense that make everyone on the team play better.”
The team has also been boosted by players like Billings, who returned from injury to score a match-winning knock in the derby final. New general manager Trent Copeland’s roster changes have also played a part. Still, Warner’s leadership and passion have been game-changers, especially during Thunder’s injury challenges.
One example is Jason Sangha, who captained Thunder during their record-low score of 15 in 2022-23. Sangha first learned from Warner while playing club cricket in 2018-19, during Warner’s ban from international cricket. On Friday night, Sangha returned from injury and partnered with Warner in a strong 29-run opening stand.
“Davey has been incredible,” Sangha said. “He’s always helping us improve. It’s pretty cool to bat with someone like him. I even had one of his Kaboom bats when I was younger, so it’s amazing to learn from him now. He’s full of energy.”
Under Warner’s guidance, Thunder have won back-to-back knock-out finals. He’s encouraged the team to be bold and confident in their batting, bowling, and fielding. Sangha praised Warner’s aggressive captaincy and risk-taking, which have inspired the entire squad.
“His tactics are smart, and he always backs us to take risks,” Sangha added. “That mindset has brought out the best in everyone.”
